Not so Viral Video: Web 2.0 vs Google SEO

I watched a guy on YouTube argue that ‘web 2.0′ (social media) is more effective than search engine optimisation, which he infers to be ‘a big joke’. He cites two pages, one of which he’d optimised for Google and the other which he’d actively promoted via social networks and booking sites.

As you may have already guessed, the page he’d promoted using his social media tools had substantially more views (2,352) than the page he’d left on Google to fend for itself (108). While it’s not really surprising, it does at least demonstrate the traffic generating power of social media.

Hey, it was 5 minutes of my life I’ll never get back, I had to draw something from it. I don’t know why we can’t all just get along…

I think the guy was obviously missing the point. Both SEO and social media are important tools in increasing traffic to websites. You can’t just rely on one or the other.

It also really depends on what the website is. If you are talking a blog, then yes, social media promotion is probably the way to go. But if this is a business website and you are providing a product/service, then SEO is really going to help drive traffic to your site.

Bottom line is, trying to focus on one or the other is probably not the best choice. To echo you point, ‘why can’t we all just get along…’
